I feel like the growing hype and influence of A24 can be attributed to this seemingly overarching trend towards desiring curators for ourselves, which is why we follow influencers and 'go watch a movie because it's A24', we no longer feel like committing large chunks of time to figuring out what movies are worth watching, what clothes are worth buying, which articles to read online. Why do that when a company or online personality can 'curate' taste for you, I've never watched an A24 movie I didn't like but I've spent forty dollars to watch a bad movie in theaters and felt like I wasted my own time, thats just what I think, almost like trusting a brand to please you regardless of what it is your buying

20:00 exactly this! i remember having so many amazing memories of going out for picnics and long nature walks with my mother and it was only as an adult talking about it with her that she told me that she did that because she couldnt afford to take us to the cinema or to paid clubs but also didnt want us to just sit about the house all day. same when we had pancakes for dinner - for us kids, it was an exciting treat, but for my mother, it was because pancake ingredients were cheap and pancakes were filling. she learnt a lot of these tactics from her own mother, who raised her as a single woman in a very rural area. when my mother was a child she didn't know that the meat from the stew she ate was from poached rabbits which my grandmother sold the pelts of to afford the veg she couldnt grow, but speaking to my grandmother now about those experiences, i am humbled by how resilient and resourceful she was. people in poverty are resilient and resourceful, and we make our own pleasure and joy from that, and i think sometimes richer people cannot see that because maybe they haven't had to make their own pleasure and joy in such a way.

I guess Johnny Depp can play a younger haymitch Abernathy because he is described as a handsome man who has since lost all of his good looks but you know haymitch is a middle-aged guy who is an alcoholic so it doesn't make sense to cast a good-looking person to play him

Another thing is the type of drugs the Sad Hot White Girls are always addicted to. It's always either drugs that are expensive and/or hard to get (cocaine, script opioids) or drugs whose most well-known method of ingestion lends itself to artsy, clichéd imagery (IV heroin). I've done a lot of work in harm reductionism and it is far more likely that a drug user in Lola's circumstances would use harder, more accessible stimulants, but Hollywood can't conceptualize meth or crack as Sad Hot White Girl drugs so they're not going to make a Sad Hot White Girl Movie about it. Not saying that there's no overlap between cocaine and poverty, just that the ratio in Hollywood is *very* different to the ratio IRL.

It is interesting how poverty is glamorised. I think that may be why rent became so popular. However, if you look at the sourrce material, it is not glamorous at all. Puccini and Illica wrote a piece about how horrible being a starving artist really is. One part that makes it endearing? How the motley crew of artists sometimes laugh through their heating not working in winter. 'Vita gaia e terribile!'. When mimi dies, I beleive the piece becomes an indictment on those who force artists to live the poor artist life. No one wants it. It results in literal death. It is not a glamorisation. It is the opposite. It is also possible to for a writer to write about poverty without ever having experienced it. Empathy. I found the concept you mentioned about 'dead queer bodies' interesting. LGBT people are not there to be used as a sacrifice for straight people. While one stereotype of an LGBT person in media is an overly camp, flamboyant and colourful person, a much more disturbing one also exists. It is just a dead, hate crimed body. This is peak queer misery.

I thought you would analyze how filmmakers have no idea what poverty looks like, which differs from what you're talking about. I need clarification - you mention class, but there is no deeper critique. Instead, you praise how beautiful actors play roles in these "we relate to you" type films.

Mixed and living in poverty and with money bc of my separated parents (i was a one night stand bby) has complicated my identity with everything. It’s complicated bc my rich DD dad showing me while young his sugar babies while with my mentally abusive plastic surgery addicted step mother (they lost everything btw)and an extremely poor religious mother. I understand the concept of the movie but it was made and written terribly. She didn’t actually connect with people that go through this in any form, she made it about herself in a “what if” thoery. My “what if” was if i would ever be able to not worry or be saved. I was in sw and how i met my SD, now my partner…. It wasn’t a pretty lifestyle or romanticized-but my partner sees me for who i am with the issues that came from my traumatic lifestyle growing up. I am not art or strong. I didn’t have a beautiful face when i scream cried into a void alone or slow beautiful shots of my malnourished body and dark underbags while i stared in the mirror. I am a woman that had to bust my ass to have a piece of toast on the table and scrape by to feel somewhat human. Now i have a lifestyle that is no longer in major stress and now in upper class but i STILL deal with the triggers and fear bc i don’t connect with anyone else and nobody will understand me. This movie was a slap in the face.🧿

How can anyone be mad at Amandla Stenberg playing Rue?!?! That is horrible! Amanda was so adorable!!! How horrible! Now, these are the same people to took to Twitter, shouting at everyone that didn't display a blck box for the whole BLM situation. No i am serious they quickly change their tune in just 12 years, that they might as well have been a written paper for my Sociology and Behavioral Health classes. 😂😂😂😂 I saw tweet after tweet of people who were going through peoples pages just to retweet peoples pass transgressions. LOL... Amandla Stenberg was too adorable to play lil Rue that if i was a wreck after reading about Rues death that it took me a week to get over it, by the time the movie was on theaters i was mad at the world for having killed Rue. Amanda was just too cute for them to have killed off her character. 😭😭😭😭 I still havent forgiven Susan Collins for the two most unfair deaths in the books. Can you imagine being Amanda and having to hear about all this nonsense? Cinna was played by a Rock God!!! Who was so sexy it was almost criminal to cast him.. 😂😂 What do Lenny Kravitz and Amandla Stenberg have in common? They aren't just black they are both also Jewish. But for some reason people decided to attack the 12 year old little girl. Shame on them!!

I chose to leave my abusive ex with three small children, and the fourth on the way. This was 1993. Becoming poor, has isolated me from my family and all. I found out, how very much socialism is prevalent, but never talked about. Most people will gladly, and what they feel is morally right, deny helping others when their problems become prolonged.

I had this weirdest experience back in my homeland in Central Asia. My mom worked at the university. So one day some American lady showed up to tell them how to teach their students English. It was a public master class for some reason, so the students (and me, just waiting for my mom to go home together) were also there. So this lady brought a ball with her and told them to teach through a game: like, students would throw the ball to each other, saying a random word in English. That’s how the university professors should teach their students (who are going to be diplomats and ambassadors, mind you - it was that kind of a place) English 😅

For me the movie Girl Interrupted was kind of horrific. It came out around the "heroine chic" era in the 90s and took a book made from the diary of a woman who struggled with mental illness to the point of cutting open her own hand because she could no longer trust her own perception of reality and by this point she also no longer able to tell the difference between that past and present either. This was turned into a "sad pretty girl" cliche that romanticized the strung out and sickly thin look and romanticized a cleaned up for Hollywood version of a damaged pretty white girl. It was tone deaf to the point of unintentional mockery.

  • @lotusyoshida

Idc about this terrible movie, but this video sounds very bitter toward white beauty. Choosing to make this a racial problem instead of a narcissist problem (because that's what the real issue is) gives away your racial bias. If I looked at a movie and complained about "black girls", that'd be off limits. This is just another non white girl jealous of pretty, rich white girls lmao

I really appreciate that you explained this genre of films/series from a different perspective. As someone who used to quite literally (unfortunately) be obsessed with this genre - even as a preteen - because I thought it was a 'cool' aesthetic, I have to admit that I never even thought of things from this perspective, and how those who actually go through certain experiences that are shown in these films aren't even acknowledged or taken into consideration in the production. Deffo subscribed after this!

That's my biggest gripe with Black films. I'm often described as a whimsical person, I enjoy movies about fantasy, fairies, wizards, etc. but everytime Black people make a film, its about struggle, it's about commentary, it's about stereotypes that imo do way more harm than good like a minstrel show. That or its about the most violent and criminal aspects of the Black Experience. No one is ever just a fucking fairy. It's exhausting and even if there are Black people depicted, they're either minor characters or they only depict Black men and treat Black Women like we don't exist.

i cant believe people not comprehending the race of characters when it is clearly stated, and it really shows who was involved in fandoms for the book or not. Most of the popular fanart at the time of these book releases dictated the way i saw characters in YA fiction (viria's art of the percy jackson series for example.) In all the popular "fanon" art, rue was black, Magnus was asian, etc etc. It just baffles me so much. Maybe it was because I interacted with Tumblr and not Twitter, but that's still so weird.

I'm sooo tired of hearing everyone's bs about black people be on TV/in movies. It's just so stupid, especially since (I just learned the other day) that only about 8% of the world is white, why would you think most characters would be white anyway? Also, I always like the art behind you, but the painting today is really awesome
